Why Did My Quail Stop Laying? 9 Causes, Ranked by Likelihood
A covey that was giving you a basket a day drops to three eggs, then one, then none. It is one of the most common questions in quail keeping, and it has one of the most reliable answers: it is almost always daylight, and if it is not daylight it is usually stress.
Below are the nine real causes, roughly in the order you should check them. Work top down — the cheap, likely explanations first — and you will solve most cases in ten minutes without touching a medicine cabinet.
First: is this actually a drop?
Before diagnosing anything, check the bird's age against what she should be producing. Coturnix have a short, steep production curve, and a lot of "my quail stopped laying" is really "my quail got older."
- Weeks 0–5: no eggs. Normal.
- Weeks 6–8: first eggs. Erratic, small, sometimes soft-shelled or shell-less while the system starts up. All normal.
- Weeks 9–20: peak. A good hen lays 5–6 eggs a week — a 70–90% lay rate across the covey.
- Months 6–12: steady, easing gently downward.
- Year 2: typically 60–70% of first-year output.
- Year 3+: sporadic. Some hens keep going; most do not.
The useful metric is lay rate — eggs collected divided by the number of hens — not raw egg count. Ten eggs from 12 hens (83%) is excellent; the same 10 eggs from 20 hens (50%) is a problem. If you never wrote down your hens' hatch dates, that is the first record worth starting today.
1. Daylight (check this first, every time)
Coturnix need 14–16 hours of light a day to lay consistently. Below about 12, production falls off; below 10, most hens stop entirely. This is the cause in the clear majority of sudden autumn and winter drops, and keepers miss it constantly because the change is gradual and invisible day to day — you notice the eggs, not the sunset.
The fix is a cheap timer and a low-wattage bulb, set to add light in the morning so the birds are not plunged into darkness at cut-off. Bring the total to 14–16 hours. Ramp up over a week rather than all at once. Expect eggs to return in one to three weeks, not overnight.
One caution: a hen only has so many eggs in her. Lighting hard year-round gets more eggs sooner and a shorter productive life. Many keepers deliberately let production rest in deep winter for that reason. That is a legitimate choice — just make it on purpose.
2. Molt
Feathers and eggs compete for the same protein. A molting hen stops laying and stays stopped for anywhere from two to six weeks. It is unmistakable once you know it: feathers on the cage floor, a scruffy or patchy bird, pin feathers coming in.

Worth distinguishing: feather loss on the back and head of hens, with no feathers on the floor and no pin feathers, is not a molt — it is usually a cock bird's mating wear, and that means your male-to-female ratio is too tight. See feather loss and bald backs.
3. Stress and change
Quail are prey animals with short fuses. Almost any change stops laying for a few days to two weeks:
- A move to a new cage or a new location
- New birds added to an established covey (rearranged pecking order)
- A predator visiting at night — you may never see the raccoon, cat, or snake, only the empty nest. Look for pulled feathers, disturbed bedding, scratch marks around the run.
- Dogs, children, or heavy foot traffic near the cage
- A feed brand change (the birds may simply be eating less of an unfamiliar ration)
The fix is usually patience plus removing the stressor. If the drop started the week you moved them, you already have your answer.
4. Age
Covered in the chart above, and worth restating because it is the answer people least want. A hen in her second year producing at 60% of her peak is not sick — she is aging on schedule. If the whole covey came from one hatch, they will all decline together, which can look alarmingly like a disease outbreak.
5. Feed — protein and calcium
Laying hens need a proper game-bird layer ration. Two specific mistakes are common and both stop eggs:
- Feeding chicken layer or scratch grains. Chicken feed is formulated for a much larger, slower-laying bird; scratch is essentially candy. Neither carries a quail hen through daily lay.
- Too many treats. Mealworms, greens, and kitchen scraps dilute the ration. Keep treats under about 10% of intake — the "healthy" vegetables are the sneakiest offender because they feel virtuous.
Calcium deserves its own mention. If you are seeing soft-shelled or shell-less eggs before production falls, that is a calcium shortfall announcing itself early. Offer crushed oyster shell free-choice in a separate dish, not mixed into the feed, so hens can self-regulate.
Also check the boring things: is the feeder actually reachable, is the water flowing, did the nipple waterer freeze overnight? A hen that cannot drink stops laying within a day.
6. Heat and cold
Sustained temperatures above about 90°F suppress laying, and above 100°F you have a welfare problem, not just an egg problem — see heat stress for the warning signs and what to do immediately. Shade, ventilation, and cool water matter more than anything else you can do in summer.
Cold is less directly damaging — Coturnix tolerate cold surprisingly well — but it raises feed needs and usually arrives packaged with short days, which is the real culprit.
7. The eggs exist; you are not finding them
Before you treat a bird, rule out this one. In an aviary or floor pen, hens hide nests in corners, under shelters, and in deep bedding. Do a slow, systematic sweep of the whole floor.
And check for egg eating — a bird that discovers the habit will clear a nest daily and leave almost no evidence. Tell-tale signs are yolk smears on beaks or bedding and the odd fragment of shell. It spreads through a covey by imitation, so catch it early: collect more often, darken the nest area, and make sure the ration is not short on protein or calcium.
8. Parasites
Mites and lice drain a bird slowly. Production falls before the bird looks obviously ill. Check at night with a flashlight around the vent and under the wings — that is when mites are active — and look for grey dust, tiny moving specks, or clumps at the feather bases. 9. Illness — and the one real emergency
Illness is last on this list because it is genuinely the least likely explanation for a whole covey going quiet, but it is first in urgency when it applies. A sick hen usually looks sick: puffed up and lethargic, not eating, off balance, or with abnormal droppings.
The exception that cannot wait is egg binding — a single hen straining, walking penguin-upright, tail pumping, sitting fluffed and away from the covey. A bound hen can die within 24–48 hours. That is not a "monitor it" situation; act the same day.
The order to work through it
When the eggs stop, run this in sequence:
- Whole covey stopped at once? Light, season, heat, a predator visit, or a feed change. Start with hours of daylight.
- Gradual decline over months? Age or a slow slide into molt.
- One bird stopped, the rest fine? That is an individual bird problem — check her over for illness, binding, or parasites.
- Soft or thin shells first, then a drop? Calcium.
