Can quail live with chickens in the same coop?
Big question for anyone coming from chickens: can you mix Coturnix in with a chicken flock?
My short answer is no — size difference, disease risk (chickens can carry things that hit quail much harder), and chickens will bully or worse. But I know some folks run them in the same yard with separate housing. What’s your experience — what works, what went wrong?
Good short answer, Ron — I’d back that up 100%. Coturnix and chickens really shouldn’t share a coop. A few reasons why it tends to go bad even when it starts out calm:
Size and pecking order: Even a “gentle” hen outweighs a quail many times over, and quail have no way to defend themselves. It doesn’t take aggression, either — a chicken just walking through or investigating food can injure or kill a quail by accident.
Disease risk: Chickens can carry things like Mycoplasma or various respiratory bugs without showing much sign of illness themselves, but those same bugs can hit Coturnix hard. Quail have a much smaller margin for error health-wise.
Space and behavior mismatch: Quail want to stay low and run/hide, chickens want to roost and scratch — different needs that clash in one shared coop.
What does work for a lot of keepers: same yard or same general setup, but fully separate housing — like a secure quail cage or aviary inside/adjacent to the chicken run, with its own feed, water, and no direct contact possible (not even through wire, since some quail get spooked or pecked at through gaps). Good ventilation separation matters too, so air isn’t shared 1:1 between the two spaces.
