Can Quail Eat Avocado?
Never — avocado contains persin, which is toxic to birds and can be fatal. Keep all parts away from quail.
Avocado is one of the most important foods to keep away from quail — and all birds. It contains a compound called persin that is toxic to birds and can cause heart damage, breathing distress, and death, sometimes within hours. Every part of the plant — the flesh, skin, pit, and leaves — is considered unsafe, with the highest concentrations in the skin and around the pit. There is no 'safe small amount' worth risking in a bird as tiny as a quail. This is a firm, non-negotiable 'never': avocado in any form, including guacamole, must never reach your birds.
Why it’s a problem
Avocado contains persin, a fungicidal toxin that birds are especially sensitive to. In poultry and other birds, persin can cause fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion), heart muscle damage, difficulty breathing, weakness, and sudden death. Reported reactions in birds can occur quickly and at relatively small doses, and a Coturnix quail's tiny body size gives essentially no safety margin. The toxin is present throughout the plant, concentrated most in the skin and the area near the pit, but the flesh is not considered safe either — sensitivity varies and the risk isn't worth taking. Because the consequences can be severe and rapid, and because there's no nutritional need that any safe food couldn't meet, avocado is an unambiguous 'never' for quail. Prepared human avocado products like guacamole are equally off-limits.
What to do instead
Do not serve avocado to quail in any form — not the flesh, skin, pit, or leaves, and not guacamole or any dish containing avocado. If you grow avocados, keep fallen fruit and leaves away from where birds forage. Should a bird accidentally consume avocado and show any signs of distress (labored breathing, weakness, fluffed and unwell appearance), contact an avian veterinarian promptly. There is simply no correct way to offer avocado — the right action is to keep it entirely out of the birds' reach.
Watch out for
Never feed any part of avocado — persin is toxic to birds and can be fatal. Keep guacamole and avocado-containing foods away too. If accidental ingestion occurs and a bird seems unwell, seek avian-vet advice quickly. This is one of the clearest 'never' foods for all birds, and a tiny quail has no margin for error. When in doubt, keep avocado nowhere near the coop.

A note from one keeper to another: treats of any kind should stay under about 10% of your quail's diet — the other 90% is a quality game-bird feed (24–28% protein), grit, and fresh water. This guide reflects established quail-keeping practice, but it isn't veterinary advice. If a bird is unwell or you're unsure about something they've eaten, contact an avian or poultry veterinarian.
