Quail Eggs Not Hatching on Day 18
Coturnix are due on day 17, and day 18 is still inside normal. A hatch that runs one to two days late is the signature of an incubator sitting slightly cool — often less than one degree cool. Those eggs usually hatch. They just hatch on day 19.
Right now: don't open the lid, don't candle, don't assist, don't raise the temperature. Give it through day 19 before you change anything. If you are past day 20 with no pip and no sound, that is a different conversation.
First: is day 18 actually late for your birds?
It depends entirely on species, and this is where a lot of panic starts — someone reads chicken advice, or bobwhite advice, and applies it to Coturnix. These are the days our hatch date calculator works from:

If you set bobwhites and you are worried on day 18, you are worried five days early — your lockdown has not even started. Close the lid and go to bed. The rest of this page assumes Coturnix on day 18, because that is the search that brings almost everyone here.
The single most likely explanation
Your incubator is running cool, and your thermometer is not telling you the truth.
Incubation is a heat budget. Slightly less heat per day means slightly slower development, and across seventeen days a small deficit compounds into a hatch that arrives a day or two behind schedule. Hatching early means the opposite — you were running warm. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why a late hatch is usually a timing problem rather than a dead embryo problem.
The part people miss: the number on the incubator's own display is frequently wrong. The most common version of this story on the forums is a keeper who reports a correct-looking temperature, gets told to calibrate, discovers their two thermometers disagree — and hatches a full clutch on day 19.
What correct looks like, measured at egg height:
- 99.5°F (37.5°C) in a forced-air / fan incubator
- 100.5°F (38.1°C) in a still-air incubator
- Humidity around 45% for days 1–14, raised to 65–75% from lockdown on
“At egg height” is doing real work in that sentence. Air at the top of the chamber can read a degree warmer than air where the eggs actually sit, and a probe dangling in the wrong place is how a cool incubator passes inspection for seventeen days.
Do not turn the temperature up today. Whatever deficit caused this happened over the last two weeks and cannot be repaid in the final 48 hours. Raising the temperature now, on a chick that is already in position and absorbing yolk, does more harm than the delay does. Verify your thermometer after this hatch, then correct for the next batch — that is genuinely how hatch rates climb.
What to do in the next hour
Almost all of this is restraint, which is the hardest possible advice to follow at 2am.
- Leave the lid closed. You are past lockdown. Opening it dumps the humidity that keeps the inner membrane pliable. A membrane that dries onto a chick is what actually kills late hatches — and it is a wound you inflict, not one the bird arrived with.
- Confirm your set date against your records, not your memory. Off-by-one is extraordinarily common: people count the set day as day 1 when the calculator counts it as day 0, and “day 18” turns out to be day 17. Re-run your set date through the calculator.
- Look, don't open. Through the window, check for pips, rocking eggs, or a shifted egg that has moved since you last looked. Any of those means it is happening.
- Listen. Put your ear to the case with the room quiet. Chicks pip internally into the air cell before they ever break the shell, and they peep from in there. Hearing peeping from an unpipped egg is the best news available on day 18.
- Check your water reservoir if you can top it up externally without opening the lid. Many incubators have an external fill port precisely for this.
- Write down the time. The whole decision from here is driven by elapsed hours, and nobody remembers accurately once they are worried.
Decision tree: what you can see through the window
You hear peeping, or an egg rocks — but no shell is broken.
→ The chick has internally pipped. Normal, and it can last 12–24 hours before an external pip appears. Do nothing. This is a good day 18.
One or more eggs have a small hole or crack, and it is getting bigger.
→ A working hatch. External pip to fully out commonly takes 12–24 hours, and up to 36 hours is not cause for alarm on its own as long as you can see it progressing. Slow is not the same as stuck. Do nothing.
An egg pipped, and it looks identical to how it looked many hours ago.
→ The genuinely hard case — see when to assist below. The short version: 24 hours of no visible progress is the threshold, and even then the first move is humidity, not tweezers.
Some chicks have hatched, others have not moved at all.
→ Staggered hatching within a clutch is normal. Leave the hatched chicks in — they can go 48–72 hours on absorbed yolk and will not starve. Opening the incubator to rescue a dry chick is how you strand the ones still working.
Nothing. No sound, no pip, no movement, and it is day 18.
→ Wait through day 19 before drawing any conclusion. This is the exact scenario that resolves itself overnight more often than not.
You smell something foul, or an egg is weeping / oozing.
→ The only situation that justifies opening the lid today. A rotten egg can burst and contaminate the whole hatch. Remove that egg quickly — under a minute, lid straight back down — and do not touch anything else while you are in there.
Should you candle on day 18?
Generally no. Our own schedule candles on day 5 and day 10, both comfortably before lockdown, and there is a reason it stops there. After day 14 the information you gain is small and the humidity you lose is not.
One defensible exception: if you are past day 20 with no activity at all and you are deciding whether to end the hatch, candling tells you whether anything is alive before you throw away eggs that might not be dead. That is a decision worth opening for. Curiosity on day 18 is not.
When to assist — the honest version
Most assisted hatches that fail, fail because they started too early. A chick that looks stalled is very often still absorbing its yolk sac and shutting down the blood vessels in the membrane. Open that shell early and it bleeds out. There is no undo.
The rule we hold to: do not intervene until at least 24 hours have passed since an external pip with no visible progress. A chick that is slowly zipping can take up to 36 hours and be perfectly fine — it is the pip that looks identical to yesterday that earns a closer look. Not 6 hours. Not “it looks tired.” 24 hours of no change, timed, written down.

- Raise humidity first. A stuck chick is usually a dried-membrane chick. Getting the chamber back to 65–75% costs you nothing and solves a real fraction of these on its own.
- Widen the existing pip only. Never start a new hole. Chip a few flakes of shell away from the hole the chick already made, and look at the membrane underneath.
- Read the membrane and stop. White or cream and papery with no visible blood vessels — you can continue slowly. Any red vessels, or fresh blood: stop and put the egg back.
- Never pull a chick out. The chick leaves the shell under its own power or it is not time. Your entire job is removing shell, never removing bird.

Any red vessels, pink tint, or fresh blood. Put the egg back, raise humidity, wait several more hours. It is not ready.
Past day 20 with nothing
Now the odds have genuinely turned, and the useful thing is a clean answer rather than more waiting. Candle the remaining eggs. You are looking at three outcomes:
- Clear, no development at all — never fertile. A breeding-pen problem, not an incubation problem, and it is fixable.
- A distinct blood ring, development stopped early — usually a temperature spike or poor storage before the eggs ever went in.
- Fully formed chick, no pip — the hardest one to look at. Typically a chick too weak to pip, or a membrane that dried and trapped it.

Common questions
Can quail eggs hatch on day 19 or 20?
Yes. Coturnix are expected on day 17 and a window of roughly day 16 to day 18 is normal, but day 19 hatches are common when the incubator has been running slightly cool, and day 20 hatches do happen. A late hatch is usually a slow hatch, not a failed one.
Should I raise the temperature if my quail eggs are late?
No. The delay was caused over the full incubation period and cannot be corrected in the last two days, and raising the temperature at hatch risks the chicks that are already in position. Verify your thermometer against a second calibrated one after the hatch and correct for the next batch instead.
Is it safe to open the incubator on day 18?
Only for a rotten or weeping egg. After lockdown, opening the lid drops the humidity that keeps the inner membrane soft, and a dried membrane is one of the main causes of chicks that pip and then cannot get out.
How long can a quail chick stay in the incubator after hatching?
Up to 48 to 72 hours. Chicks absorb the remaining yolk sac just before hatching, so they do not need food or water immediately and there is no need to open the incubator to move a dry chick while other eggs are still working.
My quail egg pipped 12 hours ago and hasn't changed. Is it stuck?
Probably not yet. Twelve to twenty-four hours between an external pip and full emergence is normal, and a chick that is actively working can take up to 36 hours. The threshold for considering help is 24 hours of no visible progress, and even then the first step is raising humidity rather than opening the shell.
Why did some of my quail eggs hatch and others didn't?
Staggered hatching within a clutch is normal. Differences in egg age, egg size, fertility, and position in the incubator all shift development by hours. Leave the unhatched eggs in place and give them through day 19 or 20.
