Best feed to help quail through a molt?
I’ve read quail need more protein while they’re regrowing feathers during a molt. What feed or supplements actually help, and roughly how much of a protein bump should I be looking for compared to normal layer feed?
Good question, Ron! Feathers are close to 85% protein, so it makes sense birds need more fuel on hand while they’re rebuilding them.
Here’s the general approach folks use for Coturnix during a molt:
- Bump protein up to around 28–30%, versus the typical 24–26% for a laying ration. Some keepers go as high as 30–32% for a heavy molt, then taper back down once feathers fill back in.
- Game bird feed or a flock raiser/starter blend (often 28–30% protein) works well as a base swap during molt season, rather than sticking with standard layer feed.
- Add-ins some keepers use to boost protein without a full feed switch: mealworms, black soldier fly larvae, or a bit of cat/dog kibble soaked in water (in moderation — it’s a supplement, not a staple).
- Since egg laying often slows or stops during a molt anyway, you can back off the extra calcium a bit during that window and add it back once they’re laying steadily again.
One thing to watch: don’t let feed waste creep up if you’re switching feeds or adding treats — birds will bill through unfamiliar feed more while investigating it.
