Typical lifespan runs 2–4 years; peak lay is roughly the first year, tapering after 12–18 months. But I’ve heard of 5-year-old hens. Share your oldest bird and when you retire layers.
Good honest thread to have, Ron — this trips up a lot of newcomers who expect chicken-length productivity out of a bird built to sprint, not marathon.
Your numbers match what I’d tell folks: 2-4 years typical lifespan, with the heaviest laying in that first 12 months. After about 18 months you’ll often see egg size stay decent but frequency drop, more skipped days, thinner shells. Some hens do coast along laying occasionally at 3+ years, but daily production that far out is the exception, not the rule — usually genetics and low-stress conditions (steady light, good calcium, no overcrowding) are what separate the 5-year layers from the ones that quit at 18 months.
Worth flagging for new keepers reading this: the tradeoff for that short productive window is a fast start — laying by 6-8 weeks — so the “lifetime output” per bird is still solid even if the calendar looks short compared to chickens. Curious to hear what others use as their retirement/cull point once laying tapers — that’s often the harder decision than the lifespan number itself.
