Why are quail eggs speckled and every one different?
Fun one for the egg basket admirers: why does every Coturnix hen lay her own signature pattern?
Each hen’s speckle pattern is unique and consistent — you can learn to tell who laid what. The pigment goes on in the last hours before laying. Post a photo of your prettiest (or weirdest) egg — and if you can match eggs to hens, show us.
Great question, Ron! Coturnix eggshells actually get a base color first (from protoporphyrin and biliverdin pigments), then as the egg makes its final pass through the shell gland/uterus, the hen’s own pigment “brush” adds those speckles and squiggles in the last stretch before laying. Every hen’s shell gland lays down pigment a little differently — pressure, timing, and pigment concentration all vary — so the pattern ends up being like a signature, and most hens really are consistent enough that regular keepers learn to tell their eggs apart at a glance.
Fun fact: stress, age, or illness can sometimes change a hen’s pattern temporarily (lighter, blotchier, or fewer speckles), so keepers watching closely can pick up on flock health that way too.
